How to Send a Drop (Peer Recognition)

A Drop is how you recognize someone on Give River โ€” a public or private shout-out you send to a colleague, optionally with a small token (๐Ÿ’ง drops) attached. Every Drop you post appears in your team's feed and, optionally, in your own Journal.

Before You Start

  • You need a positive drop balance to attach tokens to a post. Your balance resets on the weekly or monthly cycle your admin has configured. You can see your current balance at the top of the feed and on your My River page.
  • You can always post a recognition message even if your drop balance is zero โ€” just leave the drops field empty.

Two Ways to Send a Drop

Give River has two composers depending on what you want to create:

Quick Drop (Create Post modal) Creative Drop (Full Editor)
Best for Fast text or media shout-outs Styled posts, challenges, lesson shares
Steps 2 (pick a type โ†’ write) 2 (canvas โ†’ options)
Reach Team feed, filtered by visibility Team feed + Map of Good Deeds

Method 1: Quick Drop from Home

The Create a post modal, opening on the current drop balance and when it renews, above the post-type tiles.

This is the fastest way to recognize someone directly from Home.

Step 1 โ€” Open the Create Post modal

On Home, tap Give Drop in the recognition banner above the feed.

The modal opens on your drop balance โ€” "X drops to give" and how many days are left before they renew โ€” followed by six tiles. Pick the one that matches what you want to post:

Tile What it does
Recognize Thank someone by name โ€” the default recognition post
Milestone Share progress or a win; starts your message with #milestone
GIF Opens the GIF search straight away
Sticker Opens the sticker library straight away
Spark joy Something to brighten the day; starts with #sparkjoy
Create Leaves the modal for the full styled-post editor

Every tile except Create opens the same editor โ€” the prompt above the text box and the picker that opens change, nothing else does. Use the back arrow at the top left to return to the tiles.

Step 2 โ€” Write Your Message

Type your recognition message in the text field. You can:

  • Mention someone โ€” Tap the @ button in the toolbar, or type @ directly in your message, then search for and select a colleague. You can mention multiple people.
  • Add a hashtag / core value โ€” Tap the # button or type # in your message to tag a core value or topic.
  • Attach a Sticker โ€” Pick the Sticker tile on the way in, or tap the gift icon in the bottom bar, to browse animated sticker gifts. You must @mention at least one person when sending a sticker. A sticker costs you 5 shareable drops for each person you mention, and gives each of them those same 5 drops โ€” it is a transfer, not a fee.

Step 3 โ€” Attach Media (Optional)

Use the bottom action bar to add:

Button What it does
๐Ÿ“ท Camera Take a photo inline
๐Ÿ–ผ Photo Pick one or more photos from your gallery (crop supported)
GIF Search and attach a single animated GIF
๐ŸŽค Audio Record a voice message

Step 4 โ€” Give Drops (Optional)

Tap the ๐Ÿ’ง Give button in the top toolbar to attach tokens to your recognition.

  • A panel shows your current drop balance and when your drops expire.
  • Select a token amount (1โ€“5 drops).
  • Tap Add. The drops appear as ๐Ÿ’ง emoji in your message โ€” each emoji represents one drop.
  • If your balance is too low, you'll see an "Insufficient drops!" notice.

Step 5 โ€” Set Visibility

Tap the visibility button to the left of the Post button to control who sees your drop:

Option Who Can See It
Teams Your team feeds (default)
Mentioned Only the people you @mentioned
Private Your Journal only โ€” not visible in any feed
Location Filter to colleagues at a specific office or site
Department Filter to colleagues in a specific department

Step 6 โ€” Post

Tap Post. Your drop appears in the feed instantly.

Method 2: Creative Drop (Full Editor)

Use this flow to create a visually styled post โ€” with a custom background, drawings, stickers layered on top of a photo, or when sharing a completed River Run lesson.

Step 1 โ€” Open the Drop Editor

Tap the Drop button (๐Ÿ’ง) in the navigation bar, or tap Share to Feed after completing a River Run lesson.

You land on a canvas editor with a gradient background already loaded.

Step 2 โ€” Build Your Post

A text editor opens automatically โ€” type your message directly on the canvas.

Use the bottom toolbar to add more:

Button What it does
๐Ÿ“ท Photos Pick from gallery or take a photo; it becomes your canvas background
๐ŸŽฅ Video Pick or record a video
GIF Search and attach an animated GIF
๐ŸŽค Audio Record a voice message
Wallpaper Pick a background image from Unsplash
@ Mention Search for and insert a colleague's @username
# Hashtag Browse and insert a trending hashtag or core value
T Text Re-open the text editor to adjust your message

Tap the forward arrow (โ†’) when you're happy with your canvas.

Step 3 โ€” Drop Options

On the Drop Options screen you'll finalise the details:

Caption โ€” Add a caption to accompany your visual (optional if the canvas already says it all).

Tags โ€” Add any extra hashtags here.

Share With Teams โ€” A scrollable row shows all the teams you belong to. Tap a team's avatar to include them; tap again to deselect. Unselected teams won't see this drop in their feed.

Set Visibility โ€” Choose one of four options:

Option Who Can See It
Share (Public) Everyone in your organization's feed
Friends (Private) Only your connections
Journal (Private) Stored in your Journal only, hidden from all feeds
Anonymous Public feed, but your name is hidden

Create a Drop Challenge (optional) โ€” Toggle this on to turn your post into a peer challenge:

  1. Enter a Challenge Title (e.g. "5-day gratitude streak")
  2. Set the Challenge Length in days
  3. Set Reward Tokens โ€” how many drops participants earn for completing it

Step 4 โ€” Send Your Drop

Tap and hold the water drop button at the bottom. An animation plays as your drop is sent.

After sending, Give River will ask for your location to place your drop on the Map of Good Deeds. Tap Allow to pin your act of recognition to the map, or Not Now to skip.

Drop Budget โ€” Frequently Asked Questions

How many drops do I have? Your current balance is shown on the Give Drops panel and on your My River page. Admins set the allocation amount and cycle (weekly or monthly).

What happens when my drops run out? You can still post recognition messages โ€” you just won't be able to attach tokens until your balance refreshes at the start of the next cycle.

When do my drops expire? The Give Drops panel shows a countdown (e.g. "expires in 3 days"). Unused drops reset at the end of each cycle, so it's worth using them before they expire.

Can I take my drops back after posting? No. Once a drop is submitted, the tokens are transferred and cannot be reclaimed.

Does posting anonymously still use my drops? Yes. Anonymous posts deduct from your balance just like any other post; only your name is hidden.

Tips

  • Mention someone directly โ€” drops attached to a post that mentions a colleague are attributed to them, contributing to their earned-drops total and leaderboard ranking.
  • Use core value hashtags โ€” tagging a post with your company's values (e.g. #integrity) helps surface it in filtered feeds and analytics.
  • Journal visibility โ€” if you want to reflect privately without broadcasting, set visibility to Journal (Quick Drop) or Journal (Private) (Creative Drop).
  • Challenges โ€” only available in the Creative Drop flow; a great way to kick off a team habit or streak.
