Season Types and Templates
When you create a new season in Give River, the first decision is choosing the season type. The type determines whether participants compete as individuals or as organized teams, and it shapes which features and settings are available throughout the rest of the wizard.
When you create a new season in Give River, the first decision is choosing the season type. The type determines whether participants compete as individuals or as organized teams, and it shapes which features and settings are available throughout the rest of the wizard.
Season Types
Give River offers two season types:
Individual
- Each team member competes on their own.
- Rankings show individual participants ordered by their drop counts or other configured metrics.
- Best for organizations that want to celebrate personal achievement and individual recognition habits.
Teams
- Members are grouped into teams that compete collectively.
- Both individual and team-level rankings can be shown.
- An additional Teams step appears in the wizard, letting you assign members to specific teams before the season begins.
- Best for organizations that want to encourage cross-functional collaboration or friendly inter-team competition.
Choosing a Season Type
- Open the Season Wizard (from Admin > Engage > Seasons > Create Season).
- On the Season Type step, two cards are displayed side by side:
- Individual — represented by a person icon
- Teams — represented by a groups icon
- Tap or click the card for your chosen type. The selected card is highlighted with the organization's primary color and shows a check-circle badge.
- Click Next to proceed to the Season Details step.
Season Duration Templates
On the Season Details step, after entering the season's title and description, you choose a duration. Give River provides four preset options displayed as compact cards:
| Preset | Duration |
|---|---|
| Short | 30 days |
| Medium | 60 days |
| Long | 90 days |
| Custom | You set the exact start and end dates |
Using a Duration Preset
- Set the start date by tapping the Start Date field and selecting a date from the date picker.
- Once a start date is selected, the end date field becomes available.
- Click one of the four duration cards (Short, Medium, Long, or Custom):
- Selecting Short, Medium, or Long automatically calculates and fills in the end date based on your chosen start date.
- Selecting Custom leaves the end date field open for you to choose manually.
- You can always tap the End Date field directly to override the calculated date with a custom one.
Example
If your start date is May 1 and you select Medium (60 days), the end date is automatically set to June 30.
Comparing Season Types
| Feature | Individual | Teams |
|---|---|---|
| Rankings by participant | Yes | Yes |
| Rankings by team | No | Yes |
| Team assignment step in wizard | No | Yes |
| Inter-team competition | No | Yes |
| Best for | Personal achievement focus | Collaborative/competitive culture |
Tips
- If you are running your first season, Individual is often the easier starting point — fewer configuration steps and simpler rankings.
- Teams seasons require you to assign all members to a team before the season goes active. Plan team composition in advance.
- Duration presets are suggestions. You can always adjust the end date manually regardless of which preset you select.
- Short seasons (30 days) create urgency and fast results. Longer seasons (90 days) give slower adopters more time to build recognition habits.
- Once you select a type and save the season, it cannot be changed. If you realize you chose the wrong type, you will need to create a new season.
