SMART Goals

Set personal goals, break them into milestones, and earn drops as you make progress — with your manager cheering (and approving) along the way.

Where to Find Your Goals

Open My River and look for the My Goals card near the top of the page. It previews your active goals with progress bars; tap See All for the full list, or New goal to create one.

Creating a Goal

  1. From My Goals, tap New goal.
  2. Pick a template to start from (Give River ships several, and your admin may add more), or start from scratch.
  3. Fill in the SMART fields:
    • Goal title and a Specific description of exactly what you'll achieve.
    • How you'll measure it — a number, a percentage, a dollar amount, or simply "done / not done" (measured by milestones).
    • Starting value and target value (for measurable goals), plus an optional unit.
    • Start date and target date.
  4. Add 1–10 milestones — the concrete steps along the way. Each milestone carries a drop reward that pays out when it's approved. Your admin may cap the reward per milestone.
  5. Choose who can see the goal: only you, your manager, your team, or the whole company.
  6. Optionally align your goal to a company goal — if your organization has company-visible goals, a picker lets you link yours under one, so individual work rolls up to the bigger objective. The goal page then shows an "Aligns to" line.
  7. Decide whether to celebrate completion on the River Feed automatically.

Depending on your organization's settings, a new goal is either active immediately or waits for your manager's approval first (an admin approves when you have no manager assigned).

Tracking Progress

Open a goal to see its progress ring, pace, milestones, and check-in history.

  • Update progress records a check-in: a new metric value and/or a short note about what moved. Your check-ins build a history timeline on the goal.
  • The goal's pace chip — On track, At risk, or Behind — is computed from your progress against the time elapsed, so it always reflects where you really stand.

Completing Milestones

When you finish a milestone, tap Submit on it and optionally attach evidence (a note and/or a link). Your manager reviews the submission:

  • Approved — the milestone's drops land in your balance immediately.
  • Sent back — you'll see the note explaining what to change, and you can resubmit.

Some organizations enable auto-approval, in which case submitting a milestone pays out right away.

When every milestone is done and your metric target is met, the goal completes 🎉. If you opted in (and the goal is visible to your team or company), a celebration post tagged #goals goes to the River Feed automatically — and you can also share your own from the goal page or the Create Post modal's Goal win tile.

Comments

Every goal has a Comments section at the bottom of its page. Anyone who can see the goal can leave a comment — encouragement, questions, coaching notes — and the goal's owner is notified of new comments. You can delete your own comments; admins can remove any comment.

For Managers

If teammates report to you, My Goals gains Team Goals and Approvals views — see the SMART Goals for Managers article for the full guide to reviewing your team's goals and milestone submissions.

Abandoning a Goal

Life happens. From a goal's menu you can Abandon it: drops already earned are kept, but progress stops and the goal moves to your history. Abandoned goals can't be reactivated — create a fresh goal instead.

Questions?

Your organization's admin controls whether goals need approval, whether milestones auto-approve, and the drop cap per milestone (Engage → Goals → Settings). Ask them if you're unsure how your programme is configured.
